Abu Dhabi moves to launch first driverless public bus trial in MENA region
Long-term mobility strategy aims for 25% smart trips by 2040
ABU DHABI – The emirate of Abu Dhabi is set to advance its smart transport ambitions with plans to introduce the first autonomous public transport bus trial in the Middle East and North Africa region.
The initiative is being supported by the Smart and Autonomous Systems Council alongside the Integrated Transport Centre (Abu Dhabi Mobility) and Lumo, an Emirati smart mobility specialist. The move builds on earlier engagement initiated during GITEX Global 2025, reflecting growing momentum towards AI-driven transport systems.
Officials say the trial will serve as a key step in shaping future-ready public mobility solutions across the region.
The collaboration focuses on accelerating the adoption of autonomous transport technologies within Abu Dhabi’s public transport ecosystem. Authorities emphasised that the project is designed to improve operational efficiency while enhancing passenger experience. Discussions between the partners also highlighted the importance of aligning with global benchmarks in autonomous mobility.
The Integrated Transport Centre noted that such initiatives are central to strengthening the emirate’s position as a leader in intelligent transport systems. The approach combines regulatory support, technical expertise and private sector innovation to develop scalable mobility solutions.
Autonomous public transport
As part of the planning phase, the partners reviewed international case studies and best practices in autonomous public transport deployment. Technical assessments and pilot frameworks were also explored to ensure readiness for real-world testing conditions. These studies aim to support safer integration of driverless buses into existing infrastructure while maintaining service reliability. The engagement reflects a structured effort to evaluate how autonomous systems can be adapted to urban environments in the region. Lumo contributed its expertise in artificial intelligence and autonomous operations, focusing on practical deployment models suited for city transport networks.
Future mobility
The initiative aligns with Abu Dhabi’s broader Smart and Autonomous Mobility Strategy, which targets 25 per cent of all trips to be completed via smart and autonomous transport modes by 2040. The roadmap highlights sustainability, reduced congestion and enhanced efficiency as core objectives.
Officials believe the autonomous bus trial will help refine regulatory frameworks and operational standards for future expansion. It also supports long-term plans to integrate advanced technologies into public infrastructure.
